Hey everyone; so I have really been enjoying sharing with you about my journey through the book of Jeremiah the past couple of weeks.
I think when a lot of people think of the book of Jeremiah, or most of the prophet books really, they think it is super heavy and hard topic. They think doom and gloom and judgment. Some people don’t even know or understand how to look at that side of God and say He is still a good God.
I get it looking; at the wrath of God is hard. However, I don’t think it is supposed to be that hard because when I look at his judgment and wrath I also see something else. I see His kindness, love and mercy. It might be a strange concept at first; how do those things go together? Strange as it is, they always go hand in hand with God.
You see, He is a Jealous God, a jealous lover. (Exodus 34:14 NLT) The context of this verse is actually crazy because in the midst of spelling out the covenant with God, He is actually spelling out everything they do later to break that very covenant. That then leads to where we’ve been exploring in the book of Jeremiah.
Yet He is not the kind of jealous that is immoral or impure in heart motive. He is the kind of jealous that longs for us that to be in right relationship with Him and those around us. This is not simply so we are following His guidance to not harm ourselves or our neighbors, but to reach out in an undefiled unconditional love.
When that covenant is broken, there are consequence; when it happens for generations without heading His warning, it makes God angry. Isn’t punishment just, right, and even loving and kind at this point? That is what is taking place here in Jeremiah.
We can see this in the in the doom, gloom and judgment parts; the cool thing is it is not just in those parts. There are many other sides to God that are spelled out pretty clearly in the promises He made to His people, and even in the way Jeremiah communicates with God.
There are some really sweet things you can pull out that are a little more hidden; this is one of my very favorite parts about reading through this book and even the rest of scripture. I love learning who my God is, as I discover who He was for people like Jeremiah. He is pretty amazing if you ask me, even in His judgment (not that I personally ever what to experience it for myself).
Here is my challenge for you this week: take one or two of the scriptures below a day and meditate on them. Ask the questions:
- Who are you, God?
- What characteristics do You want me to see in You?
- What do you want me to understand about the context of this passage?
I would absolutely love to hear what you find and which ones are your favorite findings, so please share in the comments
