Let’s get back into John 2.
Last week we talked about the different perspectives at the wedding at Canna. At first there seemed to be enough wine, but when it ran low it became a problem. For Jesus it was not hard to address, and if others had understood like his mother who he was they would not have worried at all.
Today we are going to talk about the next part of the chapter.
Have you ever had something it your life that seemed wrong, but it was so small that you didn’t think it was a big deal? Have you started something with a good intention but somewhere along the line it got skewed and became messy? Have you seen warning signs, but ignored them?
Something similar must have happened to the religious leaders of the time. They had created hundreds of rules so as to not break the laws of Moses, but somehow along the way it led them further from God than helped them stay close. They started to worship these rules instead of God; instead of idols the rules became their god, and they slipped away from the heart of God and his intention for his people .
Take a moment to read John 2:13-25 with open eyes; watch for the new things you’re seeing through the eyes of the people.
- What was so wrong with what the people were doing? Why do you think Jesus got so angry with the question?
- What do you think the Jewish people were thinking?
- Do you think the disciples were terrified or even humiliated? Were they asking themselves should we do what he is doing? Why do you think they didn’t?
- What do you think the meaning behind the the Jews’ question was? Do you think they knew what he meant by his “father”?
- What were all the perspectives in this story and why do you think they thought these ways?
- In what ways do you see yourself in this story? Are you the man pouring out the wrath of God’s judgment? Or are you the one who is standing there puzzled by God’s actions? Are you the one who has the wrong heart posture veering off of God’s path you and the ones you are leading?
My challenge for you today is to pray and ask God where he see your heart’s posture and how he wants that to change. If you have any past testimony or encouragement you feel God is prompting you to share please write it in the comments.
