Light
Light exposes everything.
The other night, with dimmed light, I did a quick check around the kitchen, wiped the counters, the outside of the fridge, the dishwasher and a final check of the sink to make sure it was spotless. I felt satisfied because it looked clean and ready for the next day. In the morning everything seemed fresh and clean, ready for breakfast and the day. Around noon my kitchen gets really bright with the sun coming in through the window; when that happens everything is exposed to the light!
As I was prepping a quick lunch, I slowed down just enough to notice that my oven was really dirty. The floor right by the stove was sticky and the fridge had tiny fingertips and paw marks from the cat.
The night before I felt so confident that my kitchen was clean under that dimmed light, but the bright noonday light exposed the truth. But here’s the thing: if I hadn’t slowed down and actually bent down to look (dropping something always helps to get down to floor level) I actually wouldn’t have noticed.
The light exposes the lies and dirt, exposes our heart and what is really inside.
But if we don’t slow enough to allow that light to really shine and expose what is inside we won’t actually see it!
Jesus is the way, the truth and the LIGHT!
But when we are so consumed by our own righteous ways and our own understanding we will miss it!
And this is what happened with the Pharisees and the religious leaders. The totally missed Jesus!
Jesus exposed their hearts over and over again; Jesus shined his light on them, invited them to forgiveness and redemption, to freedom.
But they refused to see. They refused to allow the light shine and bring the truth forth.
I don’t want to have a hardened heart towards the light, I don’t want to disregard it; I want light in my life but the truth is sometimes I just settle with that dimmed light that make things “look” good enough. I simply conform to what is okay and not allow the light to shine and bring complete truth and freedom into my life.
Are we slowing down enough to allow that light to expose our dirt? Are we defining ourselves based on our own righteousness and dimmed light?
Pray:
Jesus please allow me to slow down to let your light shine upon me, exposing what is in the shadows of my heart; heal my heart and allow me to walk in the freedom you have bought for me through your blood.
Amen!
