The following is from the upcoming devotional “Step by Step through the Bible”
Day 332 — November 28
Read Romans 15:23–16:27
“And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them.” — Romans 16:17 (NLT)
Paul’s closing warning balances what he said earlier: “Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong” (Romans 14:1). Unity in the body of Christ isn’t about perfect agreement—it’s about love rooted in grace.
There’s a time to wrestle with Scripture. I have a friend with whom I often debate theology—not to win but to learn. Sometimes I change my mind, sometimes he does, and sometimes neither of us does. Yet, we always leave the conversation with love intact.
We keep these talks private, not public. Healthy discussion refines us; public division wounds the church. If someone chooses to stir conflict rather than pursue truth, Paul says to step away. God values unity over ego and love over being right.
Prayer
Lord, give me grace to value people more than opinions. Teach me to walk in truth with humility and protect my heart from pride and division, in Jesus’ Name.
