The blog below is inspired by this episode of “What’s God Doing”
If you think scripture is merely words on paper, you underestimate God’s Word.
James 4:12 captures it like this:
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
“Alive and active”… what does that mean? It cannot simply mean inspiring, as books have inspired people for centuries. It also cannot be literal as we understand it, because I have yet to see my Bible walk across the room.
To be alive, the word of God must go beyond ink. In fact, unlike us, the Apostles weren’t carrying around ink-and-paper Bibles; their access to the Word entailed the scrolls in synagogues and what was written on their hearts.
“I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”
Jeremiah 31:33b
We tend to assume that scripture being written on our hearts is mere memorization, but it is abundantly more; “I will be their God and they will be my people,” implies this is not merely verse recitation, but something core to our being.
You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
2 Corinthians 3:3
“Written…with the Spirit of the living God”; this means that access to the word is not limited to access to physical Bibles, because the Spirit of the living God carries it. Jesus said as much in John 14:26:
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
The word of God is alive, and can travel in the form of a physical book, a phone, a “sandbox Bible“, and however else the Spirit decides. The Spirit does this because the Word is active, and has work it intends to do.
“Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
The Word does not exist merely to convey information, nor is it simply a collection of rules; it has the power to bring utter restoration, transformation, conviction, freedom, and immeasurably more in ways words alone could never do. God isn’t after us merely knowing about Him and living a certain ways, but being made more into His likeness:
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:17-18
The Bible is something beyond words, and as we embrace that it is “living and active” we will see it’s power in ways we never imagined.
