The one thing we miss in our pursuit of justice

The following is a devotional from One Day One Step.

Isaiah 10:1-2

Woe to those who make iniquitous decrees,
who write oppressive statutes,
to turn aside the needy from justice
and to rob the poor of my people of their right,
to make widows their spoil
and to plunder orphans!

Does this passage bring specific leaders to mind, and a desire for the “woe” to be met with justice?

We must take care not to point a finger and hide behind this verse as though we ourselves are incapable of injustice. David was “a man after God’s own heart”, and yet even he made a widow his spoil (in fact, he made her a widow.) The call for Biblical justice must be matched with honest humility, as a dishonest heart can breed injustice in even the best of us.

Today is an apt time to ask God to reveal what we may not be able to see within our own hearts. To effectively seek justice, we must own that left to our own devices we could become like the very leaders we decry. As the Apostle Paul confesses, “I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.” (Romans 7:19) While Micah 6:8 calls us to “act justly”, this call is not isolated: we must also “walk humbly with your God.”

  • Ask the Spirit to reveal any seeds of injustice in your heart
  • Ask the Spirit for wisdom in how to address the injustice you see “humbly with your God”
