Truths to hold on to (Part 7)

How are you doing defeating the enemy’s lies over you, your mind, body, spirit, and life?

Are you feeling like you are winning a victory yet? Or are you tiring of the process and feeling defeated?

If the latter is you, I have been there. It is hard. But keep pressing onward — that is why we are doing this. It is for me too. That is why I am writing these. I think we let our hearts and minds get easily distracted from our focus on God, and we begin thinking too much about ourselves. But God understands.

I am going to add another step to our five steps:

  1. Identify the lie the enemy fed you.
  2. Find the truths in God’s Word and what He has spoken to you.
  3. Speak or pray those truths out loud until you believe them and act in that belief.
  4. Rebuke the enemy.
  5. Repent for not believing the truth in God’s word and believing the lies instead.
  6. Thank God for anything and everything.

Today, let’s look at Psalm 66.

Psalm 66

1 Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth!
2 Sing about the glory of his name!
Tell the world how glorious he is.
3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
Your enemies cringe before your mighty power.
4 Everything on earth will worship you;
they will sing your praises,
shouting your name in glorious songs.” Interlude

5 Come and see what our God has done,
what awesome miracles he performs for people!
6 He made a dry path through the Red Sea,[a]
and his people went across on foot.
There we rejoiced in him.
7 For by his great power he rules forever.
He watches every movement of the nations;
let no rebel rise in defiance. Interlude

8 Let the whole world bless our God
and loudly sing his praises.
9 Our lives are in his hands,
and he keeps our feet from stumbling.
10 You have tested us, O God;
you have purified us like silver.
11 You captured us in your net
and laid the burden of slavery on our backs.
12 Then you put a leader over us.[b]
We went through fire and flood,
but you brought us to a place of great abundance.

13 Now I come to your Temple with burnt offerings
to fulfill the vows I made to you—
14 yes, the sacred vows that I made
when I was in deep trouble.
15 That is why I am sacrificing burnt offerings to you—
the best of my rams as a pleasing aroma,
and a sacrifice of bulls and male goats. Interlude

16 Come and listen, all you who fear God,
and I will tell you what he did for me.
17 For I cried out to him for help,
praising him as I spoke.
18 If I had not confessed the sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
19 But God did listen!
He paid attention to my prayer.
20 Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer
or withdraw his unfailing love from me.

There are so many things to be said about God. There are many things to read about Him. But whether we choose to believe those things and act on those beliefs is up to us. That is why it is so important to take every thought captive and to think on the things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy. Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in His sight.

Guarding our minds and what we say about ourselves is so important, because our brains begin to believe things when we hear them all the time. What are you putting into your mind and declaring over yourself? Is it that you are stupid or a failure? Or that God does not care about you or that He is not good?

If so, you will begin to believe that and act like that if you are not taking those thoughts captive and replacing them with the truth. I have lived in lies for far too long, and I’m tired of letting them rule me. Are you? What actions are you taking to defeat them?

God, I ask that You would change our hearts. Soften the hardness. Show us how to take ourselves off the judgment seat over ourselves or against You. Show us how to trust You in every area of our lives, not just the ones we feel comfortable with You having.

Forgive us for taking Your place in our lives. Help us to love You with our everything and to see ourselves the way You see us. Thank You for Your unchanging character. Thank You.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
