Truths to hold on to (Part 1)

Are you feeling discouraged and beat down by the lies of the enemy?

Sometimes there are so many lies coming at you at once that it feels overwhelming; it can feel like you’re holding the weight of the world on your shoulders all by yourself. That is not what we are meant to carry as heirs of the Kingdom and children of the King. Jesus says His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:28–30).

It may sound like I’ve had a theme going lately. I’m not sure, but the lies of the enemy have been especially hard to overturn this year for me. It’s difficult to write about anything else when this is what I’m learning and walking through right now. So why don’t we try something together for the next few weeks? Let’s tackle some of these lies side by side.

The first thing you need to do is recognize them. What are the lies you are believing?

Once you identify the lies, you can find the truth. Sometimes you’ve read certain chapters of Scripture so many times that they feel like they’ve lost their meaning. Or maybe they don’t feel true in your life. That’s when you need to move them from your head to your heart and really believe them. Let’s read this chapter together and pull out the truths.

Psalm 60

1 You have rejected us, O God, and broken our defenses. You have been angry with us; now restore us to your favor. 2 You have shaken our land and split it open. Seal the cracks, for the land trembles. 3 You have been very hard on us, making us drink wine that sent us reeling. 4 But you have raised a banner for those who fear you— a rallying point in the face of attack.

5 Now rescue your beloved people; answer and save us by your power. 6 God has promised this by his holiness: “I will divide up Shechem with joy. I will measure out the valley of Succoth. 7 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh, too. Ephraim, my helmet, will produce my warriors, and Judah, my scepter, will produce my kings. 8 But Moab, my washbasin, will become my servant, and I will wipe my feet on Edom and shout in triumph over Philistia.”

9 Who will bring me into the fortified city? Who will bring me victory over Edom? 10 Have you rejected us, O God? Will you no longer march with our armies? 11 Oh, please help us against our enemies, for all human help is useless. 12 With God’s help we will do mighty things, for he will trample down our foes.

One thing I often do when reading the Psalms is place the devil and his demons in the spots where it talks about foes or enemies—because they are my enemies, and they are the ones I’m fighting daily.

So how do we get these truths into our hearts? You can memorize the verses and pray them. That’s actually how the Psalms were originally used. You can also declare the truth over your life until you begin to live like it’s true. There are times when David commands his own spirit to praise God and remember who God is. Many of the Psalms exist to help us remember who God is and to remind ourselves to worship Him—whether we’re rejoicing or deeply discouraged.

So, who are you? Who is God? And what has He promised?

  • I am beloved.
  • God is powerful.
  • He has promised to save me.
  • With God, I will do mighty things.
  • He will trample my foes.

Speak these truths out loud. Ask God to make them real in your life. Remind yourself of them or pray the verses throughout the day.

Then rebuke the enemy out loud: “You have no authority over me, my mind, or my life. In Jesus’ name, be silent and leave.”

Other things that help me are turning on worship or thanking God for anything and everything I can think of.

I encourage you to do this daily. I once heard a story about a kid who wrote one truth about who they were on a note and stuck it to their mirror. They told themselves that truth every day, and over time, they became more confident and began to believe it. If that’s how God created our minds to work, why not use it to our advantage?

Please share how you’re doing as you conquer the lies you’re tempted to believe. How have you gained victory? And what are your favorite Scriptures to use?
