The following is from the upcoming devotional “Step by Step through the Bible”
Day 325 — November 21
Read 1 Corinthians 11:2–34; 12–13
Corinth was a city obsessed with status. At social gatherings, people were seated and served according to class and influence. Sadly, this same mindset crept into the church during the Lord’s Supper. Some ate their fill while others went hungry, revealing pride and division within the body of Christ.
Paul confronted their behavior and reminded them that the Lord’s Table represents equality in Christ. Every believer stands on level ground at the cross. Around that same time, he also addressed their misuse of spiritual gifts. The Corinthians had turned gifts into symbols of prestige, but God designed them to build the body, not to elevate the individual.
Then, in one of Scripture’s most profound chapters, Paul showed that love is the highest way. Without love, even the most impressive gifts mean nothing. Love unites what pride divides.
Today, the same temptation remains—to value influence over humility, charisma over character. But in God’s kingdom, love defines worth. When we honor others, we honor Christ Himself.
Prayer:
Lord, forgive me when I value status over people. Help me to see others as You do and to love them as part of Your body. Teach me to walk in humility and unity, in Jesus’ Name.
