Have you been getting comfortable in life? Do you lean on things or habits t0 bring you peace or comfort?
Recently I was trying to find the root of some fears I had. I felt like it was holding me back from giving God my all. After much prayer and heart-searching God revealed that my fear of pain was the root. Physical or emotional pain kept me turning to earthly comforts and saying no to scary things. Comfort became a mini-idol in my life.
Don’t get me wrong, I probably have a lot of work left to do on that, but it was so freeing to surrender it to the Lord.
There are a lot of things we use to bring us comfort, but how often do we choose comfort over God’s will? How often do we turn to things to comfort us instead of bringing our troubles to God? If only we could trust God in all circumstances! We hear so many times that ‘God never promised life would be easy,’ yet we still run from trials instead of trusting God to get us through them.
Luke 12:32-34
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.Philippians 4:5-7
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
We are not supposed to run to earthly things for comfort or peace. It does not last. No amount of ice cream will take away the heart break. Movies or books will never last long enough to forget all the reality of hard things you are going through. When our adventurous God calls you off the couch, out of your house, even out of your country and away from the things you know, it is worth the hardships in the end. I am learning to trust God and walk by faith.
What are your comforts? Are you going to God instead of things to comfort you, or are you more comfortable in your habits? Are they keeping you in a place of stagnant faith or are you willing to do anything and go anywhere? I challenge you this week to search your hearts and see if there is anything in the way Gods plans for you.
