When criticism blinds us

The blog below was inspired by this episode of “What’s God Doing?”

Have you ever looked at times or seasons in history and thought, “well this new generation is so messed up? How are we going to give our country over to them?” Or “I’m just going to work with these older ones over here, those younger ones are to out of control?”

It seems this world is going crazy with so many wars and natural disasters… “Wars and rummers of wars” some would say. What is this world coming to?

I’m sorry if this feels too political; bear with me, as politics is not my point.

Paul asked me to share my own story of what God has been doing in my life this year. As some of you know I went to Florida to do a Discipleship Bible School (DBS) this spring. It was an incredible time of learning the entirety of Scripture. At the end one thing I could see so clearly was how intentionally detailed God is. Through the whole Bible everything had a point. Some things, when you zoom out, might seem like a strange story that does not really fit. We read some of the bigger failures of our bible heroes and think, “why did God have that put in there? He could have just left those and the gruesome stuff out.” We study the laws in Leviticus and wonder, “are those even relevant anymore?”  We push through the genealogies or the temple details and question to value today.  If you’ve thought things like this, it’s okay: so have I. Guilty!

What I learned was that all this stuff that might seem trivial is actually God showing his people and the world His Glory. He does not want anyone to miss a chance to find Him. He continually points to what a life with Him looks like compared to the counterfeit reality that people were giving their lives to. Each detail is significantly relevant because He wants to show that nothing, no one, is too far gone to be redeemed.

This was significant for me, and maybe you can now see where I am going with this.

It’s lead me to think about how often we focus only on the negatives of the events going on around us or even the next generations.  We are quick to criticize before they even have a chance to convey what God is orchestrating in all of it including the messy, hopeless, nonrelevant, or mundane parts.

In our YWAM Virginia family gathering our leaders had us talk about the pros and cons for Generation Alpha. I realized all I have heard is cons but the pros that were brought up were pretty cool. One of the first things I heard was that this generation will be the biggest generation in history. That seem ironic! A friend brought up a good point not long ago; she said it seems like Satan is really going after babies in these next generations; we talked about the impact of abortion, gender confusion, and the decline in marriages. Crazy, right? With the point she made, it seems Satan has lost worse then ever with Gen Alpha.

They also have the most opportunity to learn other languages. They will be exposed to more cultures and news of other countries. They also have more of a voice to speak up than any other young generation. The other generations may have had some of this but they were the pioneers of it, whereas Alpha will have it handed to them with ease.

Am I painting a good enough picture of what I heard? It seems like God might just have an even bigger plan than we realize for Gen Alpha… or better yet, every generation that now has these advantages because of the people that paved the path. If they are filled with the passion for the Gospel, they have easy access to tools and skills that can change the whole world for Jesus.

So, the questions at the beginning and all the negative thoughts expressed about generation may continue, but what if we stop complaining about the things that are changing and ask God to show us what He sees? God what are you doing with this time, with this Generation?  What are you changing that might bring together the puzzle of your story that you are fitting together across the whole earth?

Every detail is important. We are incapable of sinking the plans of God. What He sets out to do He will finish in complete perfection.

This summer, God taught me these pieces of His character and how He still is intentionally detailed, even now in our lifetime. Praise God He does not give up on any of us like we do! What a beautiful, amazing God we serve.

So, I challenge to stop being one of those negative thinkers and speakers. Our words have power of life and death. (Proverbs 18:21, James 1:26) Don’t be so quick to curse the things that God might just be orchestrating.

What has God been teaching you about his character this summer? Write in the comments below and share with us so that we may see something new. If you have not watched the video attached please check it out; it shares a beautiful way to connect with us.
