Why is time with God is important?

I know last week I talked about distractions. This week I want to talk about why time with God is important.

As I shared in last week’s blog, relationship with God is like marriage—but better than a human spouse. First, He is the most important part of your life:

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.”
Matthew 22:37–38

Second, you can and should have the kind of intimacy where you tell Him everything, and He has the final say in the decisions you make.

Third, He should be where your hope and joy come from:

For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth.
Psalm 71:5

How can you have this kind of relationship—or any kind of relationship—if you don’t know or spend time with the person? Do you ever feel bored or angry with God? It does make spending time with Him harder for sure. But like in marriage, when those feelings happen, it is even more important to choose to love and continue walking with God. God understands.

As I shared last week, maybe change things up a bit. Invite God into the things you love to do. Talk to Him about your day—not just about the things that went wrong, or the things in your family that need fixed, or all the sick people, or the tragedies that happened in this world. Talk about the things that make you happy and the things you like to do. Have Him suggest the book of the Bible you should read next. Ask Him questions about it. Do research on the traditions or historical background. Your relationship with Him can actually be fun too, you know.

Reading the Word of God is important. It helps you know the God you are devoted to. It helps you understand your place in the story He is writing with your life. It helps you know how to conduct yourself as a child of God living in His kingdom. But it does not have to be all that your time with Him consists of. When you look in the Bible, He is a part of their everyday life.

So, how do you spend time with God? What is your favorite part of being in relationship with Him? Is there anything we can pray for you in getting out of those ruts that happen in boredom or frustration with God? Please share these things with us.

Have a good week everyone.
